I
have been involved in sport throughout my life; I have been weight training for
over 20 years and competing in bodybuilding since 1991. Each year as I get older,
I can say that my health and fitness only improves.
I find
great satisfaction in showing others that this is attainable whatever the age.
Bodybuilding has taught me that when one puts one's mind to a task you can achieve
the seemingly impossible, that the only thing holding one back is oneself.
I
have learned self-control physically and emotionally. In 1992 in an accident at
work, I severed the tendons in my right forearm; this resulted in a disability
in the use of my hand regarding writing and keyboard work. This accident taught
me you can over come great obstacles and not only survive but grow from these
experiences.
In 1999 I returned to full time studies and was
introduced to chemistry and the sciences, via food technology, then I continued
on studying in the year 2000 with biochemistry. The year 2000 I developed a teenage
health and fitness program and receiving an invitation to attend the Active Girls
Breakfast in March as a role model for schoolgirls, which was organised by Sport
and Recreation Victoria.
The year 2000 resulted in one of my
greatest achievements; with the encouragement of friends I founded the Australian
Women with Muscle. A support, contact and promotion group for all women in Australia
who train with weights, with the intention of developing a healthy, muscular and
feminine body.
I am always asked how long will you keep doing
this, and I just don't see myself ever stopping training. Weight training can
give you confidence, assurance and pride in yourself, it teaches you control,
courage and respect. My personal belief is a natural way, but I have learned not
to be critical of others' beliefs and accept everyone for who they are.
After
winning the NABBA Australian titles in 2002 I represented Australia in England
at the Nabba Universe titles placing 6th. 2004 I won the IFBB State and Australian
titles becoming one of a small number of Australian women to win both NABBA and
IFBB Australian titles. Also in 2004 I started writing for Australian Flex and
Muscle and Fitness magazines.
